It’s complicated to know who to trust.
A compelling look at the career of reporter Seymour Hersh. A portrait of a difficult but dogged man who will not quit when investigating crime and corruption among the powerful in politics, the military and business.
The documentary is as sharp and engaging as its subject. Poitras and Obenhaus skilfully edit between historical footage of the stories he uncovered and new footage talking to Hersh and people in his life about the type of man he is.
I particularly enjoyed the off-the-cuff sections when he angrily talks about quitting the film with the directors, and then about why he gets frustrated. It’s tough and honest.
I wonder how many investigative reporters like Hersh are still working. Hersh himself has moved to self-publishing online. It feels like the kind of journalism that the press is much less willing to invest in. We need reporters like Hersh now more than ever.
