“What would’ve happened if I wasn’t here?”

I’ve never seen To Catch a Predator, so I had no idea what to expect as I sat down to watch Primetime in a miserable local Cineworld.

Within the first few minutes it’s clear that director Lance Oppenheim and cinematographer David Bolen have taken a lot of lessons from horror. It has all the soulless dread of the Backrooms. It’s thick with a dark atmosphere - sweaty and toxic.

Robert Pattinson is spectacular as Chris Hansen, a TV presenter with a saviour complex. He’s subtle and calculating, with just the right amount of unhinged creep to make this one of his most memorable parts. He isn’t doing it alone, either. Merritt Weaver is doing some of her best work as the complicit Andi.

There’s no justice to be had. Nobody to root for. Every character has been corrupted by their own voyeurism and that’s clearly the point, but as a viewer you feel some of that stink on you as you leave the theatre.
